Fairies in the dust

Standard

Fairy Tales in 2012 is just ending and this is my last article on this amazing event that will certainly spark everyone´s imagination, as we travel to fairy land.

And like on the others before we talk about women´s roles in Fairy Tales and those same roles evolution, this time is for the fairies, the Fay people of old times, that used to be ugly little creatures, that would glamour (yes that was when the word was born) young men into their land thru their magic powers and offer them food so to keep them prisoners for years or centuries, they would also steal babies and do other devious things, they where powerful, to some point and incredibly feared, with kings and queens and constantly fooling the sight, and the many times the brain and heart of humans.

Slowly with time they stopped being feared and seen as cute little things nature associated and of the garden variety like if suddenly creatures who were as much feared as gods or storms became tiny birds for admiration, only later do we see them in Fairy Tales, even when these have very little Fairies at all in the fairy godfather role, where they are a poor substitute for the never existent mother, a powerless creature who basically offers advise, and who´s only role is to advance the story, and who´s only power is a move of a wand or a bag of dust.

Later on we see another twist of the fairy evolution, again thanks to Disney and mostly the image of Tinkerbell, they become miniatures, with butterfly wings and with a more infantilized look then before, or the middle aged clumsy woman who does her job only god knows how.

Oh i do miss the creatures of power of old times, instead of the more childish images of today, when Tales of the Fay where scary and of warning and very far from any form of Fairy Tales even older versions, where happy endings where rare and stories a lot more brutally honest.

So ignore my ramblings if you wish but don´t ignore this event, since there is a lot to choose from and not much time left to shop.

By the way earlier today before going out for a wonderful afternoon in the sun i wrote my first official Zombie Popcorn blog and for those interested you can find it here: I´m not a zombie but i do love popcorns.
